Hello, and welcome to our regular update on world-changing movies coming soon to cinemas in Edinburgh, Glasgow and beyond: providing you and your friends with creative inspiration for positive action in our shared world. This month we are delighted to be welcoming Cree Tribal elders to Edinburgh to speak about Britain's climate impact on the first nations via the new film from the distributors behind The Age of Stupid & Burma VJ: Dirty Oil (see below). We're also looking forward to the general election... introducing you to our empowering 2010 partners... and launching our beta global action movie database. TAKE ONE ACTION FILM FESTIVALS Register for emails Follow us on Facebook Follow us on Twitter NEW RELEASE: DIRTY OIL Leslie Iwerks | Canada 2009 | 73mins + short discussion (see below) Sat 17 Apr 6pm and Sun 18 Apr 3.30pm - Filmhouse, Edinburgh Wed 5 May, 5.45pm - Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow Welcome to the strip-mined world of Alberta, Canada, once the beating heart of indigenous Cree communities, now home to arguably the most polluting energy project on the planet keeping US and UK companies in business. Bearing witness to the tar sands through the eyes of scientists, company reps, politicians, doctors, environmentalists and the communities directly impacted, Dirty Oil takes you to the centre of the new 'black gold rush' powered by the world's persistent dependence on fossil fuels. "A film of devastating power" Empire We are delighted to welcome from Canada the indigenous Cree activist Clayton Thomas-Muller and Cree tribal elder George Poitras who will take part in audience discussions at both Filmhouse screenings. There will also be a discussion after the GFT screening on 5 May. UK ELECTION SPECIAL: THE WAR ON DEMOCRACY John Pilger | UK 2007 | Cert 12A | 95mins + short discussion (see below) Tues 4 May, 6pm - Filmhouse, Edinburgh Award winning journalist John Pilger presents a compelling view of Washington's intervention over more than 50 years in Latin American states, propping up often brutal regimes which have reinforced the 'invisibility' of their majority peoples. The film sets similar policies supposedly continuing in Iraq, Iran and Lebanon against the rise of vibrant, accountable and popular uprisings in countries like Venezuela and Bolivia that are leading to a powerful sense of change among poor communities. It ultimately reveals a scale of political engagement, alongside new approaches to economics, that the West should be actively supporting, and arguably learning from. "An extraordinary and fascinating documentary" Empire Whatever the results, the General Election - following hot on the heels of this screening - will undoubtedly be marked by public feeling about democratic accountability and the West's intervention in Iraq. This screening will be followed by a short audience discussion reflecting on the question: "how should British governments safeguard democracy at home and abroad?" With contributions from leading civil society organisations. Buy tickets | View trailer

TAKE ONE ACTION: TAKING OUR NEXT STEPS WITH YOU After two great festivals and year-round events showcasing more than 70 world-class, world-changing movies, we are delighted that Take One Action has received charitable status to continue our work in Scotland. Thanks to our friend Keith for helping to make this happen. As well as programming more regular events, including outreach to more remote parts of Scotland, we are also gently launching Scotland's first comprehensive global action movie database (looking for feedback, good and bad). This will enable you to find films on a range of issues, for the right age group, with resources and advice about how to obtain the film and show it in your community. We are also currently looking for a festival volunteer to help one day a week with a range of programming and administrative tasks. If you are interested, please .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

MEET OUR SUPPORTERS Take One Action Film Festivals is supported by a range of organisations with operations in Scotland - from businesses to charities - who creatively empower the public around film and global citizenship, as well as implementing direct solutions to the global challenges of our time. You can find out who they are, what they do, how you can get involved, and which upcoming events they are involved with here. Thanks to our friend Robert for helping to make this happen.
