Building Arts Spaces for Palestinian Liberation
The genocide in Palestine has revealed a fault line in our arts world. This year, Take One Action isn’t working with its usual Glasgow venues, CCA and GFT. Both institutions have failed to listen to the calls of their communities and meaningfully stand with the people of Palestine – a failure that in the CCA’s case, manifested in calling the police on its audiences, and in the case of GFT the resignation of many of its board members.
As a festival that stands firm in its commitment to Palestinian liberation through the cultural boycott of Israel, we did not feel able to proceed in partnership with these venues this year and instead we wanted to create a space that feels welcoming, safe and rich with possibility for our audiences.
In this assembly-style event, we’ll begin by sharing breakfast before hearing provocations from Art Workers for Palestine Scotland and artist-run spaces doing incredible work in Glasgow to support the Palestinian struggle. Then, we will break into working groups to map out and strategise our next steps for building the art spaces we deserve: ones that do not merely gesture vaguely towards principles of justice and liberation in their programming, but respond to these calls and embed them in everything they do.
