Eating Up Easter
Film Synopsis: Eating Up Easter
In a cinematic letter to his son, native Rapa Nui (Easter Island) filmmaker Sergio Mata’u Rapu crafts a global wake-up call from the remote Pacific.
With mass tourism and rapid development re-shaping their island, the Rapa Nui people, descendants of the statue builders, are seeking to recycle ancient traditions in a bid for environmental sustainability.
Despite its remote setting, the film captures familiar struggles, whether with environmental threats posed by growing infrastructure, waste management and plastic pollution, or with richly diverse cultural traditions being commodified and hollowed out. But at the heart of Eating up Easter lies a rousing tribute to the role of community engagement, arts and creativity in driving positive social change.
