Film Synopsis: Ghost Fleet

Director: Shannon Service, Jeffrey Waldron | Countries of production: United States | Year: 2018 | Length: 90 min
Language: English, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai with English subtitles | Age: 15+ years

What does modern-day slavery look like, and are we complicit in perpetuating it?

Patima Tungpuchayakul is a Bangkok-based activist who has committed her life to rescuing fishermen from Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and other nations of Southeast Asia, who have been trafficked into slavery on Thai fishing boats. Fighting death threats, corruption and complacency, Patima and her small team travel to remote Indonesian islands to free these men and help them obtain justice.

Combining interviews with dramatically shot re-enactments, Ghost Fleet lays bare some of Patima’s extensive research, pointing to a much wider context of exploitation at the heart of the global fishing industry. It makes a powerful case for governments, companies and consumers to wake up and take action.
