Film Synopsis: Midnight Traveler

Director: Hassan Fazili | Countries of production: Canada, Qatar, United States | Year: 2019 | Length: 87 min
Language: English, Bulgarian, Persian, Turkish with English subtitles | Age: 12+ years

When the Taliban puts a bounty on Afghan director Hassan Fazili’s head, he is forced to flee with his wife and two young daughters.

Recording their perilous journey, Fazili shows first hand the violence, danger and uncertainty they encountered in their search for safety. Once the restless flight and the immediate danger end, Midnight Traveler remains as striking in its exploration of the paralysing wait, the indefinite limbo of the asylum-seeking process.

Many documentaries have highlighted the plight of asylum seekers; few have managed to reveal the reality of displacement so powerfully and with such intimacy. Despite relying solely on mobile phone footage, Fazili’s filmmaker’s eye captures moments of beauty and poetry – and the love shared between a family on the run.
