About

Recontextualising a revolution: a unique opportunity to re-appraise the history of nonviolent resistance in Palestine from a feminist perspective.

Most images of the first Intifada are of stone-throwing Palestinian youths facing off Israeli tanks. This hopeful documentary tells the story that history overlooked, and pays tribute to the thousands of women whose grassroots organising – whether they were taking to the streets in their thousands, forming farming co-ops or community schools – was the unsung, beating heart of this spontaneous uprising.

Combining animation, exclusive archive footage and intimate, in-depth interviews with women who were on the ground in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, Naila and the Uprising sheds light on these resolute women’s sacrifices and contributions to the most vibrant nonviolent mobilisation in Palestinian history.

Plus Audience discussion, Character/actor Q&A, Short Films

Join us after the film for inspiring conversations and opportunities for creative, effective personal action. We are delighted to be welcoming the film’s main protagonist, Naila Ayesh, founder and director of the Women’s Affair Centre in Gaza.
