Film Synopsis: The Golden Thread

Director: Nishtha Jain | Countries of production: Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom | Year: 2022 | Length: 91 min
Language: English, Bengali, Hindi with English subtitles | Age: 12+ years

Mesmerising, tactile, and laden with visual poetry, The Golden Thread captures the last vestiges of the jute industry in Kolkata, India: where a few mills have been weaving this sustainable alternative to plastic with 100-year-old machinery, practically unchanged since the industrial revolution.

Director Nishtha Jain trains an intimate lens on the entire production chain: from harvesting and drying the reed along the river, to workers weaving with antique looms, fibers of the ‘golden thread’ heavy in the air; and the industrial accidents that have become commonplace in an industry that demands increasingly rapid production with no concern for quality or worker welfare. A beautifully-weaved work in and of itself, The Golden Thread places questions about the past, present, and future of the textile industry in striking dialogue.

Beyond the Screen

Take part in a meditative weaving activity during the film, and join us for an informal audience discussion afterwards to explore the intersection of climate justice and labour rights in the textile industry.
