Film Synopsis: The Mushroom Speaks

Director: Marion Neumann | Countries of production: Switzerland | Year: 2021 | Length: 90 min
Language: English, German, Japanese with English subtitles | Age: 12+ years

An enchanting exploration of what mushrooms can teach us about being in the world: in solidarity, adaptability, and ways of imagining otherwise.

What does it mean to think radically through networks, through mycelium, through enmeshed and attuned connectivity with the more-than-human world? What can we learn from mushrooms’ resilience and adaptability, and their worldmaking power even amidst devastation? Narrated by a silent mushroom, this wondrous documentary in conversation with scientists, mycologists, foragers and mushroom lovers is an optimistic experiment in relating to each other and the world around us differently – and finding hope and possibility even in the ruins.

Content notes: References to the consumption of mild altering substances & hallucinations

Access notes: Mainly bright images; considerable visual storytelling; no abrasive sounds or flashing images.

Our friends at Lighthouse Books have put together specially-curated reading lists for a selection of films, inviting us to delve deeper into the issues explored in our line-up. Here you’ll find a list of books recommended by Jessica relating to The Mushrooms Speaks which explore ideas of entanglement and resilience in ecology, communities and beyond.

Beyond the Screen

Dive into the world of mycelium with a live performance from Aberdeen-based artist Saoirse Horne (Lamium), who will present a score for mycelial meditation and connection, in collaboration with – and in honour of – the mushroom. Saoirse gathers live electric impulses of conversation between Oyster bodies, translated through a digital synthesiser, and in chorus with digitally foraged samples of fungal noise.

Booking Information

To make our events more accessible, we operate a sliding scale ticket policy (thanks to SQIFF for leading the way) across all our venues and online. Choose what to pay based on your personal circumstances, from £0-10. All we ask is that you are honest with us so that we can continue offering this flexibility to those who need it most. When you pay a higher price for a ticket, you help subsidise a ticket for somebody on a lower income.

Graphic with turquoise background with the white Take One Action logo in the top left corner. White text top-right reads 'Sliding Scale Ticketing' and white text underneath reads 'How much should I pay?; £0-2: I find it difficult to meet everyday costs; £4-6: I can meet everyday costs but sometimes find it stressful to do so; £6-8: I can meet everyday costs; £10: I can comfortably meet my everyday costs and have savings too'
