District 9

Director: Neill Blomkamp | Countries of production: Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States | Year: 2009 | Length: 112 min
Language: English, Afrikaans | Certificate: 15 Cert

Subverting the sci-fi genre slightly, for purposes of political and social allegory, Director Neill Blomkamp teams with producer Peter Jackson for this tale of extraterrestrial refugees trapped in contemporary South Africa.

Segregated from humans in an area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the welfare of the ‘refugees’ but will do anything to exploit their advanced technology. Categorised as both entertainment and social commentary, the film confronts issues surrounding asylum with remarkable insight and power.

Entertainment with a sociopolitical message; a cerebral sci-fi and apartheid allegory that is heavily armed with provocative ideas.
