Shot during the spring of 2013, One Million Steps depicts the Gezi Park protests in Turkey where thousands of the cities inhabitants stood together to oppose the urban development plan for Istanbul’s Taksim Gezi Park. While many protesters used their voices, artist Marije Nie used a different medium – tap dancing.
As the residents flee from tear gas, Nie turns her performance into a statement of solidarity, using the protest ground as her stage and channeling the peoples anger and frustration in to her work.
