Solar Mamas

Director: Mona Eldaief, Jehane Noujaim | Countries of production: Denmark, Egypt, United States | Year: 2012 | Length: 60 min
Language: English, Arabic with English subtitles | Age: 12+ years

The remarkable journey of Rafea, a Bedouin woman, who overcomes strong opposition from her husband and community to travel to India and learn the basics of solar engineering.

Rafea joins others from Kenya, Colombia, Nicaragua and Burkina Faso at the Barefoot College, which trains impoverished women from around the world in the hope of changing lives and attitudes.
As the course advances, her fellow learners develop strong bonds of friendship despite the language and culture barriers. Rafea keeps getting calls from home and has to head back half way through the course. Her husband forbids her to return, but Rafea will not give up on bringing power to the village, even if she has to re-wire an entire community’s mindset.

Spiky and beguiling […], a small jewel in the Why Poverty? strand.
