Screened as part of TOAFF16
Walaa, 16, is from Dara’a in Syria. This is her first film. It won’t be her last.
Through intimate footage Walaa recounts her terrifying journey as a 14-year-old girl from Syria to Jordan, and how filmmaking has given her hope through the chance to voice her story and reach out to other girls with similar experiences.
This film was devised as part of a workshop organised by Another Kind of Girl in response to mainstream media reporting of the refugee experience to give Syrian girls the chance to tell their own stories. The project engaged Syrian girls in artistic and technical training in photo and video to reflect on and share aspects of their lives in their own voices. With cameras, microphones and pens in hand, the girls set out to document their everyday lives – how it looks, feels and sounds from the ground, at the heart of their world.
